Making Millions with Affiliate Marketing

I met with a guy yesterday who is the digitial advertising business and works for one of the TOP online conglomerates around.
He manages the digital advertising of some of the most expensive online ads and websites.
We discussed one of his clients.  He told me that this client nets around $500,000 a MONTH purely from affiliate marketing!!!
His client has no inventory, has no brick and mortar shop and nothing to sell.
The way it works is:
He is an affiliate of other companies.
For example: A company has a website that sells expensive jewelry.
An affiliate signs up with that company as an affiliate.
The affiliate invests money in paid advertising in the best positions on the web.
(This is the only expenditure of the affiliate)
Once the ad is clicked on, the customer is directed to the main website, in this case, the jewelry site.
If the customer decides to buy a product, a nice commission is sent to the affiliate.
There is a third party software that manages the amounts of clicks that are brought in through the affiliate's advertising.
So wise affiliates know 2 things:
1) Which e-commerce websites are the most in demand and pay highest affililate commissions.
2) Where to spend their money in advertising.

Mobile and Local Search Results

Mobile internet usage is skyrocketing globally.  Searches on mobile devices are often local results.
Your websites should be mobile compliant- a tip from Olivier Amar and independent marketing consultant at PointUp media.
Additionally, every month you should list yourself onto different websites that keep you on top of local searches.  Examples of local sites are google, yahoo, bing, yelp, facebook, Better Business Bureau, citysearch.com, zagat.com.

Analytics and Competitive Analysis

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is not just about organic or paid listings.  Even if you rank well for a keyword- you need to convert on that traffic - or else what good is it?  You can use analtyics tools to track the success of your online marketing, but also to pick up on what your customers are doing.

Why am I Interning at Salem Global Website Marketing Firm?

In random order- the reasons why I am interning at Salem Global:

1) Raphi is a REALLY nice guy.  It's also refreshing to be around someone so innovative and entrepreneurial.  And another thing, he is very honest.

2) In this transitional period of finding my next project (job/career-wise) -it's a good way to keep busy.

3) Learning some interesting new skills that I never had before.  Computer technical HTML programming as well as online marketing strategies are examples of new information.  I enjoy the level of healthy intellectual stimulation I am receiving from it -and just as some people enjoy taking a photography class or knitting class- it's as if I am taking a summer online marketing-computers class.  I am really learning loads by the day and enjoying it- purely for the sake of knowledge.

4) In reference to reason #3- yes, there are added benefits to just "knowing" the information.

Possible ways to utilize the knowledge.
                a) I can start my own SEO or online marketing/social media consulting firm.  I can establish my own client-base and work on marketing small businesses online.
                b) Even if I do not start an online marketing company - I can use the site optimization and website marketing tools for any online business or website I may ever build.

Interning at Salem Global, SEO, HTML

Began an internship yesterday at Salem Global - a NYC based Online Marketing Firm.  I thought it would be worth my while to learn some more of the basics of online marketing firsthand.

He manages a few online accounts- their website marketing and social media - including: facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter etc.  He also specializes in SEO- Search Engine Optimization of websites showing up in searches in Google, Bing and Yahoo.

SEO is maintained on a regular basis for each company. They do this by checking analytics and keyword searches- using google analytics and a program called WebCEO- which shows you how high the rankings are of that site and the changes over the days. (Looks kind of like the stock market stats.)

On my first day - yesterday, I already learnt some basic HTML and created a mini-HTML document using the skills I learnt through an online tutorial.  It's actually kind of fun!!!  You see a bunch of code and plug it in according to the directions- then you see the results show up in a real readable form! The cool thing is - it just looks and sounds much harder than it really is- trust me.  You just need some time and patience, but it is very understandable.

I will not be creating websites with this info, but the knowledge is important to make necessary tweaks and edit to website HTML in order to optimize the sites with appropriate data (or meta-data).  The stuff hidden in the code can really increase the rankings of a site- a VERY big trick to the trade of optimizing sites.

Stay tuned for more...

E-Commerce, eBay, Amazon.com - Selling Online

It's about time for a May post.  With spring fever in the air it's hard to keep track of the blog-  but it's still happening.

More on making money on-line.
Seems that no matter what you are selling - it can be the deal of the century- but if your site is not high ranking in the search engine results you are not selling anything.  It's all a search engine game.  Whether you are paying to have your ads show up in the top google searches (known as PPC- Pay Per Click) or you have your site "optimized" (SEO- see past posts on Search Engine Optimization) to show up as one of the first few sites when people "google" your product.
Nobody will even know you exist if you are not showing up there.
Your website can be beautiful and have all of the key components to a graphically organized site, but if people cannot find it, it won't get you too far.
The SEO world is highly competitive.  Everyone wants to be on the top of google - whether they pay to get there through ad search keywords or organically showing up in friendly searches.  It's all a ranking war.  The analytics behind the scene is what is really controlling what you see when you type in your requests.
So how is one to succeed at selling stuff on-line?  How do you get your products noticed and at the top?
Three practical options I have found, but I am still learning and open to suggestions:
1) Pay someone to get you up there.  That can be costly, but may be an investment you must make if you need to invest more of your time in the operations of the business rather than the marketing.
2) Learn the SEO, PPC analytics world on your own.  This in it of itself is a full time job- so check out option #1.  Although you may outsource your SEO though, it's a good thing to be educated and know what is expected.  You do not want to be taken for a ride.
3) If you can't beat 'em join 'em.  Since facebook, eBay and amazon already seem to have risen to the top of the website world, why try to beat them.  Just set up your online business through one of those popular, most-visited eCommerce sites and set-up shop without worrying about SEO.

The only problem left is... what to sell.  I am open to suggestions. Please feel free to post your ideas.

Sortprice: An E-Commerce Service Using Social Media and Facebook

Around the beginning of March, I had an interview at a company called Sortprice.  They were looking for sales reps to market their service to businesses that have on-line stores.  I was intrigued by their service and would have been thrilled to sell it- except for the fact that it involved heavy phone sales and cold calling.

The gist of their service:
They have created an application ("app"- which basically means it's a computer software application that is hosted in a browser-controlled environment such as java... ) that they offer to their clients.  This application works with facebook fanpages.  Once a company has a fanpage on facebook and some other online store site they can easily apply the function to their fanpage - that when someone goes to their fanpage you see their products right there as if it was a duplicate store without ever leaving facebook!

There have been statistics shows that facebook gets just about as many hits as google does so this is an excellent marketing ticket for e-commerce companies.  Plus, facebook is known for their targeted marketing- because the age, gender and location of the member is all recorded and the ads are manipulated to be appropriated for those stats.

Let's take Nike for example.  They have an online store selling their products, plus a fanpage on facebook.  When you "like" them on facebook and become a fan and then visit their fanpage- there you will see all of their products - exactly as you would see them on their site - and when making a purchase the checkout button is there and only redirected to the main check-out once you click on it.

If a store does not have a facebook page you can easily follow the steps on how to create one.  It's very easy.  The only requirement is that the business has a site with products and a checkout.

The benefits of Sortprice are:
1) Targeted marketing- getting the customers who are already fans of your company and products.
2) Never leaving facebook- and having the products right on the site.
3) Once you make a purchase all your friends can see and that increases the exposure as well.

There is a monthly fee- it is quite pricey- but companies can assess whether the fees are worth their ROI (return on investment) is worth it.  They have a lot of very satisfied customers, ie Petco, Adidas...

You can check them out as Sortprice.com.  Their actual website is a price comparison site.  The facebook feature is an added service they have developed more recently with the rise of facebook stores.

Google AdSense- Pay-Per-Click (PPC) - Monetizing Online

The purpose of this blog was not to monetiz.  I started it purely to learn about how online media works and how people actually DO make money online, while blogging my findings along the way.   Since I do seem to be getting a decent amount of traffic onto this site, I figured why not just put up some Google Ad.
Placing ads on my blog is both a learning experience and an experiment to see how it all works.

Here were my findings:
1) Placing the Ad onto the site: I can go into a whole song and dance as to how to embed the ads into the blog- but it is a whole lot of HTML jargon.  I just googled "How to place adsense onto a blog" or something like that and came up with very detailed instructions.   I do not remember them at this point- but it took me all about a half an hour in total.  Yes, for easier reference I could have copied and pasted the steps into this blog, but why should I if you can just google it and follow the clear instructions. For now I am ok with that.  I There was a lot of HTML reading and cutting and pasting- which I am so clueless about and really disinterested in as well.  However, as you can see it worked.  And the whole time I was saying to myself that I would just blindly follow the instructions and then hope for the best.

2) People actually DO click on the ads.  I have to check my adsense account, but last I checked I had make a couple of cents!  But for doing nothing (a half an hour of investment) why not make some cents- just for the kick of it.  Plus, in the future who knows if more people will suddenly start to visit this site. Also, it's just a great skill to have whenever you are building sites- and you don't have to do anything.

Believe it or not there are people who make a living off people clicking on their google ads!!!
If you have a couple of websites with traffic and ads- it all "adds up!"

3) It's free. Period.

Maybe one day I will post the steps to placing the ads, but for now this is all.
I can only tell you it's easier than it seems.

Landing Pages

You can have all the online marketing tools in action - ie PPC (Pay-Per-Click)- Google Sponsored Ads, high organic ranking in Google - etc showing up everywhere! Those clicks lead you to a website- which is known as the "landing page."  Very nice.  You got to the site.  The key is to convert those into sales.  There needs to be somesort of call to action once the person is on the website.  So even with all of the advertising in the world, nothing will help if a person lands on your website and doesn't do anything.  You would like them to make an inquiry, call for more info, click to buy etc.  So the website itself needs to be tempting with good incentives and an honest look - to convince customers to buy from it.

For example:  Let's say you are doing a google search for plumber in your area.
So you type into the search bar: " plumber, flushing, nyc"
A list of plumbers show up in the Ads on the sides or on top of the search results. (By the way, for all of those skeptics who think nobody clicks on those ads, how do you think google makes all of their millions???... I mean, billions???)

So you see a results that catches your eye and you click on it.
The top result for roto-rooter plumbing.
The ad looks like this:

Roto-Rooter Plumbing - Trusted & Recommended Since 1935!
Open 24hrs. Call (718) 358-6228
rotorooter.com/PlumbingServices

Perfect.  24 hours and it has a number and a website!
You click on the site link- and it's official looking. There are coupons. And in the center of the page there is a mouse icon and banner that reads: "click here to schedule a service online!"  Plus, lots of phone numbers and all the places they serve.  Looks trustworthy- so I will either call a number or click that banner.
(Not really, because thank G-d I do not have a plumbing issue... )

So there you have it - a great ad campaign on google sponsored ads PLUS a great website that causes you to act.  In other words, a great "landing page."  With a good "conversion rate."  The hits are converted into sales.

Affiliate Marketing (My First Passion) Revisited

We are taking a short pause from the SphinnConn saga - because there have been other fluid pieces of valuable info coming in a I don't want to get backlogged.

Staying focused, my original purpose of this blog was to learn how to make money on the internet through affiliate marketing.  I think it still stands to be my favorite topic when it comes to e-Commerce, online marketing etc.  I got side-tracked from the affiliate marketing topic because in order to sell anything on-line I learned that you need to have good exposure - usually through high SEO- where you show up high on search results.  So, I delved into SEO tips which can go on forever as it is ever-changing- keeping up with google and analytics etc.  I am not equipped to compete with those who eat sleep and drink that stuff.

BUT... I STILL am fascinated by how people can make money off the web- without even owning any inventory and without even having your own website!

I will share an online interview about a guy who made millions on affiliate marketing and how he did it- (thanks David).

http://mixergy.com/mike-colella-adbeat-interview/

This guy Mike Colella was an engineer and quit his job because he started making so much.
He uses Contextual Advertising - Google AdSense Ads-  He would buy them and sell other people's products.  Sending traffic directly to an affiliate site - directly to their landing page.  Clickbank.com offers- high commissions because they are digital products - with no cost to ship - so there is about a 75% commission rate- which is very high.
He also affilates with e-books.  He did well selling an affiliate e-book on solar panels to reduce energy bills - because people like to buy things to save them money.

He started in 2008 just wanting to make money on the internet.  He started a website on fitness thinking he'd make money though putting on Google AdSense.  But didn't make any money.

Then, he started with PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising - with a small budget spending about 10$ a day on Adwords.  Started with fitness sites - and saw a lot of ads in the diet markets - picked the product he saw most often that sold a diet product and became an affiliate of that.
Would spend 20 and make 25 on a sale.  He continued spending money on advertising and making more money.  A few months later made a $5,000 profit and the month after that 25,000 then 4th month 60,000 then 5th month 90,000-(that was with making 250,000 revenue.)
The original product was called "Truth About Abs" - an e-book.

This is all from promoting other people's products!
How'd he do this?
He looked at what ads were showing up as AdWords and modeled his ads after those that were working.
He used an AdWords e-book that helped as well.  He understood the fitness market and how to reach the market by expanding keywords.  Plus, fitness has a very wide appeal.  You can sell it anywhere.
You do not always need to stay so focused around the topics.  You start an AdGroup on AdSense - with that theme - but also try other ways to stretch it.
Think: What are people thinking about, reading about when thinking to lose weight?  ie the word "carbs." And then you bid on those words.
To follow-up, you check if those words are converting for you- if people are searching those words and clicking through and buying.  You evaluate the traffic and see if it's profitable.

Question???
He used people to create the scripts for him - through e-Lance and other outsourcing sites - found people to write the scripts for the Adgroups  It's basically taking keywords- putting them into excel and then putting them into one adgroup.
First script - creating a bunch of adgroups from a big set of keywords automatically- taking the first 10 keywords and putting  into one group- then the next 10 into another group.
The next was to get google keywords from the google keyword tool.  He was putting in single keywords (like 200) and putting them into excel and then breaking them up into Adwords campaigns.
He got his scripts to become automated.  (I need to clarify what they were referring to by the word "script" - this part of the interview was unclear to me...).

To grow - he kept creating campaigns and analyzing the data and getting scripts automated to get it done quicker.
He also invluded a CPA - Cost Per Action offer with a CPA network.  Not a CPS- Cost Per Sale.  Not immediately paying out the money.  It's a trial that converts to an offer.  So they give you a front-end payout because they know the person with sign-up.  It can be filling out a firm, installing a web-bar- it's just a cost per action.

Now he has a software that helps his determine what is working on the different sites.  It automates the process that finds what's working.  He used to look at sites and see how the owners advertise their sites etc.

Online Reputation Management, continued.

Continuing on the topic online reputation and management- ideas from the Spinnconference.
I'm going to backtrack and add why online reputation management is so critical.  Searching makes it very easy for people to bring up the dirt on a company or a person's name.  A growing sector is managing what results show up for a corporate or personal brand.  There are experts who specialize in how to develop a reputation online or how to repair a bad rep situation and turn it into a great one!  This can be done through message boards, answering comments from a thread on a message board etc.  So, it's important to constantly monitor your company's online reputation, how it ranks in search engine results like google or bing AND what sites and places it is showing up within the search results.  It's tricky, because depending on the company there are different ways to become "popular" online.  If you are a strong financial firm or hedge fund - any speck of a bad rep can be severely damaging.  But, if you are a dance studio, one bad comment made by a client can bring lots of responding comments- many in the studio's defense!  The studio's online reputation manager would need to monitor the threads of comments and be on the constant lookout to colorfully steer it into the right direction and skillfully work it in their favor!

More to come on linkbuilding, analytics, mobile and local tips (VERY HOT TOPIC!) etc.

On a personal note: I have just begun an active jobsearch and am looking to work with an advertising/marketing firm or e-commerce company in the area of account management/client relations/business development.  Any leads or suggestions are welcome.

More from Sphinncon Israel. Online Marketing, Google Ranking, SEO and more.

Continuing with the expert information gleaned from the Spinncon Israel conference sessions.
There was loads of information and valuable tips, so I will keep sharing.
ONLINE REPUTATION MANAGEMENT
+Shira Abel- from Abel Communications - says even a rep can be helpful ... as long as it is rebutted and answered to.  For example, she was optimizing her business but it got a bad posting on the website.  Many people responded and there turned out to be about 30 posts in the thread.  She diffused the argument against the company with hardcore facts and people began responding in agreement with her as well.  That got a lot of publicity from a negative comment.  As long as it is handled correctly, the negative publicity can turn out in the company's favor.
+ Menachem Rosenbaum of TENS-Technology (menachem@tenswebmarketing.com) said that every result in the top 10 of google need to be with a good reputation.  For example, a typical client such as a Hedge Fund in NYC with a bad rep- you want to work on their SEO results to have only good hits show up in the top 10.  That is the job of the SEO manager.  These SEO experts work on percentage earnings before and after the ranking changes.
+Dan Gershenfeld, CEO of Interteam- recommended to optimize LinkedIn- make sure it is current.  And he talked about content writing and online PR.

New Media Conference in Israel, Google Ranking... SEO Tips

I'm still in Israel and as you all can see have not blogged in almost a month!  Too much "vacation mode", but I am back on the saddle.
Continuing, as promised, with the Sphinncon highlights and all the new things I learned about new media, SEO, google rankings, lead generation, online marketing, PPC etc.
I managed to jump from conference room to conference room because there were two different tracks going on the same time and I wanted to hear as much variety as I could.  Ok, so here are all the tidbits I picked up - without further ado.
SEO TIPS
+ Gil Reich of http://www.answer.com/ said that you can't trust google searches when hiring SEO consultants. You need references.
+ Uri Breitman of TBWA/DIGITAL - said you need to check keyword searches analytics every day - there are always new queries for keywords.
PAID SEARCH TIPS
+ Chris Sherman- Executive Editor of Search Engine Land & President of Searchwise - said to always test your landing page- and keep optimizing it.  (Landing Page= the page where people are first brought to where the purpose is to persuade the customer to make a sale.)
+ Alex Chernowsky- landing pages should NOT be the homepage - visitors will get lost.
Leads ---> Sales ---> CPC.  Need a BIG prominent title - highlight a word.  Need trust indicators on your site if you are selling something.  Some examples are icons like - McAfee secure, 100% guarantee, media, cnn.com etc.  Then, have a "call to action" at the bottom.
Side Note:  CTR= Click Through Rate
This next idea is awesome!!!.....
+ Dan Perach- PPCPROZ- a mobile phone feature - you can google local businesses and then call the links straight! The "links" are dialable.
+ Asaf Paz- A Google Seminar Leader, WEBSEM- who is a certified AdWords trainer added that 97% of new visitors do NOT convert.  It's a cookie-based link (called Remarketing) so  it can last only if that user stays on the same computer.
Also, he adds, that before trying to drive more traffic by PPC, you need a good CTR, which So first you must have a good site- a good "landing page" before bringing people to it.

More to come... LOTS more to come.

The Sphinncon Conference in Jerusalem, Israel 2011 -Online Marketing Expo

There is no way my experience today could be just a day's worth of a post, so it will have to continue on as a series to get out all of the wealth of information I gained today at the Sphinncon Israel Conference.

Firstly, I will start by giving a backgroud and setting.  As per my last post, I was put in touch with some Israeli Online Marketing companies.  That's when I got wind of an annual massive conference that takes place in Jerusalem - for all of the TOP online media professionals in Israel and beyond.

It cost me 100 dollars to register and was held at the Inbal Hotel.  The registration started at 7:30 AM and I arrived arrived arounnd 8 although the actual seminars did not begin until about 9.  The program had back-to-back forums starting from 9AM lasting until 5:45 AM with a one hour lunch in the middle.

To be honest, a lot of what was discussed I actually already knew from blogging here. :)  But, that is not to say that I did not learn A LOT of nice new stuff as well.  Also, this blog helped me tremendously by just being able to follow along with all of the new media jargon.  That was a huge plus or else I would have been lost!

To be honest, it was a bit humbling sitting in a room with hundreds of people who were tops in SEO, PPC, Analytics, Link Building, Social Media etc.
Also, although I find this to be cool and exciting, it kind of bothers me how obsessed everyone is with google.  And the heavy attachment to people and technology.  It's almost like turning google and technology into a "G-d" and that these classes are their "Bible."

But... I digress... I guess it still is a 'honest' profession and undeniably the wave of the future (and present.)
So the people at the conference seemed to definitely be on top of their game.

I left before the last seminar because I felt I had absorbed enough info for one day - and didn't let the 100 bucks hold me back.

I did make a few contacts - one particular presenter Charles Kalech whom I spoke with about my idea of working to get new clients for SEO and online marketing companies.

Next post will have more info more specifically on what new "new media" stuff I learnt.  Stay tuned because it's a lot of nice juicy highlights from top people.

Shalom from Israel!

Account Services and My Meeting with Raphi Salem on Online Marketing

Been on a short hiatus from this blog.  Holiday season had everyone busy and in vacation-mode.
But a very recent connection in the online media world was just made, thank G-d.  And this meeting proved to be a wealth of information and some hope as well.

After blogging for some time about making money on the internet, rising in the ranks of search engines through SEO, Pay-Per-Click, Adwords and learning about affiliate marketing, link-building, lead generation etc ... I FINALLY met a man who is actually living out all of these concepts and not just thinking that he is!

I connected with a guy named Raphi Salem who runs a top SEO company called Salem Global, amongst other things. http://www.salemglobal.com/about-salemglobal-internet.php
He ranks the highest in the search engines for online marketing - unreal!
I do not plan to go into detail about the content of our meeting, because his business development ideas are not for me to disclose here.  But, whatever he had to share seemed pretty feasible and exciting to say the least!
Plus, he already has over 100 functioning websites that are optimized to rank high in search engines and link to each other as well.
Apparently he monetizes off of mainly google ads!!!
Also, lead generation- providing warm leads for big clients like real estate agents in Israel and dentists and dermatologists.  He searches google analytics monthly to check which search words are most common and then reaches out to those niche markets. Wow.  Brilliant.  Oh, and best part- there is a money back guarantee!

His main site was http://www.jewishweb.com/ - and from there he explained to me how he built his online empire.
He also gave me a few leads to people making money on this internet who are living in Israel.
This coming Sunday I will be in Jerusalem and am debating whether or not to spend the day at the SMX Conference http://searchmarketingexpo.com/sphinncon being held at the Inbal Hotel.

People I still need to scout out http://www.andreayager.com/

Will keep you "posted" (get it? :)
