Setting Up Ad Campaigns- Matches

Setting up Ad Campaigns and AdGroups in Google Adwords:

Organization is key.
First edit devices- (because we don't want to waste $)

Match Types:

1) Broad Match: Most expensive and most impressions. But irrelevant to audience you may not want.

2) Phrase Match: Quotations around keywords

3) Exact Match: Only showed [    ] - most efficient - with cost and traffic, but not much volume.

4) Negative Match: Block when users use certain words in queries. Put a - sign before the word.
Every week look at Queries to see what's NOT good or relevant and then make them negative.

To be continued with setting up Adgroups.

Some SEM Jargon, but Important. CPA and CPL Explained.

CPA= Cost Per Acquisition-
My understanding is that whenever there is a click that leads to a conversion, the company will pay a certain price. In this case we will use $31.
Company X is willing to pay us $31 each time they get a click and a conversion.
We want to get that down to US having to pay only $20 to get a click to conversion.
This way, if we pay the 20 and get a click-conversion, we make $11 profit on that click.

CPL= Cost Per Lead-
Spend divided by total leads received.  For example: Every ten clicks a conversion to make $25 and we make $1.24.

Facts Driven Data.

We must win the bids.

WOMM vs. Paid Online Advertising

TOP SECRET!!!
FOR MY BLOG READERS ONLY!!!
Although I have been working for Escalate since December 2011, I am still convinced that digital advertising is the way to go.

Don't get me wrong, I am also convinced that WOMM (Word of Mouth Marketing) and Experiential Marketing work as well.  I have seen it work over the past few months.

Our company also has a strong "Social Media" team, which helps with follow-up and execution of the "experience" and WOMM.

I have finally come to see, though, that digital media advertising and WOMM are NOT a contradiction.
Which works better? There is not hard core proof, nor does there need to be any.
BOTH work and I believe strongly that BOTH are necessary.

SO, as soon as I get my final pieces together, I will propose that Escalate begin to feature a paid online marketing campaign for their clients as well.

Let's see what happens.

SEM - PPC - Paid Advertising

Yes, it has been a while, but I am back and do not want to lose my passion and interest in the online marketing arena.

Just stumbled across a few notes taken by me around last summer when I was gung-ho on expanding on my knowledge of the online marketing arena.

I had done a lot of research then, and hope to share it within the next few blog posts.

 First to clarify:
 SEM= Search Engine Marketing
 PPC= Pay per Click

Setting up ad campaigns:
If you set them up well the first time, then it all boils down to maintenance.
Here is were you enter all of the keywords one may search for that can lead a person to this product you are marketing.

For example:
If you were advertising a podiatrist in Brooklyn let's say (my eldest brother Howard in this case) you can set up your ad campaigns with a large variety of keywords ranging from anything associated with feet. For example: bunions, corns, foot pain, hammer toe, ingrown toenails, fungus... and the list goes on.

The hardest part is the analytics.
Each week you heck to see how each keyword (or phrase) is doing and what results they are bringing and how many people actually clicked on your ad based on the appropriate keywords.
You don't want to waste money by having people click on your ads who are not looking for what you are marketing!!!

After that, you can modify the keyword searches to take out the ones that are not doing that great.

Writing Ad Copy

Most companies contract this out to India.  Its the 3-4 lines that you see in your Ad.

To manage a companies Ad Campaign you can charge a low fee of 250-500 monthly.
The time spent on this is about a 1/2 hour 3x a month.
About 2 hours a week.

This includes putting together an Ad Campaign - (hardest most critical part) and maintaining the keyword searches based on the analytics.

MORE TO COME!!!

Online Marketing Companies

A while back, when I was in search of a job with an online marketing/SEM component, I was recommended to apply for jobs as an Account Manager.  I was also recommended to try to steer away from small companies which may be a bit sketchy and to stick to big solid ones.

I never got to applying to all, but below are some companies I was recommended to check out.

1) Pulse 360i
2) MediaBistro
3) Martini Media
4) Business Insider
5) Yahoo.com
6) NY Magazine
7) Joseph Jacobs
8) Linkedin.com
9) about.com
10) the knot
11) Americangreetings.com

Ten Tips to Increase Your Site's Visibilty in Google.... continued

Welcome back!
In the last post we had tips 1-5.
Here we will continue with tips 6-10.

6. Make sure any important or timely pages on your site have a link from another page on your site' that's already indexed with Google.  For example, you might link to your "New Promotions!" page from your site's homepage.

7. Place the core navigation and content of your site in text, optionally using JavaScript or Flash to enhance.

8. Use ALT attributes for images.  Google can't understand images, so you must help by categorizing them properly.  ALT attributes are like meta tags for images. They provide additional information directly in the tag and are shown when a user cannot view the image.

9. To make sure Google crawlers can read your site, try checking your site using a mobile phone.

10. Although traffic from Google and other search engines is great, you must always remember to provide your users with a great experience.  They will bookmark and share your site.  You can use Google Analytics and Google Website Optimizer to measure and test your changes in design and usability.

Making Millions with Affiliate Marketing

I met with a guy yesterday who is the digitial advertising business and works for one of the TOP online conglomerates around.
He manages the digital advertising of some of the most expensive online ads and websites.
We discussed one of his clients.  He told me that this client nets around $500,000 a MONTH purely from affiliate marketing!!!
His client has no inventory, has no brick and mortar shop and nothing to sell.
The way it works is:
He is an affiliate of other companies.
For example: A company has a website that sells expensive jewelry.
An affiliate signs up with that company as an affiliate.
The affiliate invests money in paid advertising in the best positions on the web.
(This is the only expenditure of the affiliate)
Once the ad is clicked on, the customer is directed to the main website, in this case, the jewelry site.
If the customer decides to buy a product, a nice commission is sent to the affiliate.
There is a third party software that manages the amounts of clicks that are brought in through the affiliate's advertising.
So wise affiliates know 2 things:
1) Which e-commerce websites are the most in demand and pay highest affililate commissions.
2) Where to spend their money in advertising.

Mobile and Local Search Results

Mobile internet usage is skyrocketing globally.  Searches on mobile devices are often local results.
Your websites should be mobile compliant- a tip from Olivier Amar and independent marketing consultant at PointUp media.
Additionally, every month you should list yourself onto different websites that keep you on top of local searches.  Examples of local sites are google, yahoo, bing, yelp, facebook, Better Business Bureau, citysearch.com, zagat.com.

Analytics and Competitive Analysis

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is not just about organic or paid listings.  Even if you rank well for a keyword- you need to convert on that traffic - or else what good is it?  You can use analtyics tools to track the success of your online marketing, but also to pick up on what your customers are doing.

Why am I Interning at Salem Global Website Marketing Firm?

In random order- the reasons why I am interning at Salem Global:

1) Raphi is a REALLY nice guy.  It's also refreshing to be around someone so innovative and entrepreneurial.  And another thing, he is very honest.

2) In this transitional period of finding my next project (job/career-wise) -it's a good way to keep busy.

3) Learning some interesting new skills that I never had before.  Computer technical HTML programming as well as online marketing strategies are examples of new information.  I enjoy the level of healthy intellectual stimulation I am receiving from it -and just as some people enjoy taking a photography class or knitting class- it's as if I am taking a summer online marketing-computers class.  I am really learning loads by the day and enjoying it- purely for the sake of knowledge.

4) In reference to reason #3- yes, there are added benefits to just "knowing" the information.

Possible ways to utilize the knowledge.
                a) I can start my own SEO or online marketing/social media consulting firm.  I can establish my own client-base and work on marketing small businesses online.
                b) Even if I do not start an online marketing company - I can use the site optimization and website marketing tools for any online business or website I may ever build.

Interning at Salem Global, SEO, HTML

Began an internship yesterday at Salem Global - a NYC based Online Marketing Firm.  I thought it would be worth my while to learn some more of the basics of online marketing firsthand.

He manages a few online accounts- their website marketing and social media - including: facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter etc.  He also specializes in SEO- Search Engine Optimization of websites showing up in searches in Google, Bing and Yahoo.

SEO is maintained on a regular basis for each company. They do this by checking analytics and keyword searches- using google analytics and a program called WebCEO- which shows you how high the rankings are of that site and the changes over the days. (Looks kind of like the stock market stats.)

On my first day - yesterday, I already learnt some basic HTML and created a mini-HTML document using the skills I learnt through an online tutorial.  It's actually kind of fun!!!  You see a bunch of code and plug it in according to the directions- then you see the results show up in a real readable form! The cool thing is - it just looks and sounds much harder than it really is- trust me.  You just need some time and patience, but it is very understandable.

I will not be creating websites with this info, but the knowledge is important to make necessary tweaks and edit to website HTML in order to optimize the sites with appropriate data (or meta-data).  The stuff hidden in the code can really increase the rankings of a site- a VERY big trick to the trade of optimizing sites.

E-Commerce, eBay, Amazon.com - Selling Online

It's about time for a May post.  With spring fever in the air it's hard to keep track of the blog-  but it's still happening.

More on making money on-line.
Seems that no matter what you are selling - it can be the deal of the century- but if your site is not high ranking in the search engine results you are not selling anything.  It's all a search engine game.  Whether you are paying to have your ads show up in the top google searches (known as PPC- Pay Per Click) or you have your site "optimized" (SEO- see past posts on Search Engine Optimization) to show up as one of the first few sites when people "google" your product.
Nobody will even know you exist if you are not showing up there.
Your website can be beautiful and have all of the key components to a graphically organized site, but if people cannot find it, it won't get you too far.
The SEO world is highly competitive.  Everyone wants to be on the top of google - whether they pay to get there through ad search keywords or organically showing up in friendly searches.  It's all a ranking war.  The analytics behind the scene is what is really controlling what you see when you type in your requests.
So how is one to succeed at selling stuff on-line?  How do you get your products noticed and at the top?
Three practical options I have found, but I am still learning and open to suggestions:
1) Pay someone to get you up there.  That can be costly, but may be an investment you must make if you need to invest more of your time in the operations of the business rather than the marketing.
2) Learn the SEO, PPC analytics world on your own.  This in it of itself is a full time job- so check out option #1.  Although you may outsource your SEO though, it's a good thing to be educated and know what is expected.  You do not want to be taken for a ride.
3) If you can't beat 'em join 'em.  Since facebook, eBay and amazon already seem to have risen to the top of the website world, why try to beat them.  Just set up your online business through one of those popular, most-visited eCommerce sites and set-up shop without worrying about SEO.

The only problem left is... what to sell.  I am open to suggestions. Please feel free to post your ideas.

Sortprice: An E-Commerce Service Using Social Media and Facebook

Around the beginning of March, I had an interview at a company called Sortprice.  They were looking for sales reps to market their service to businesses that have on-line stores.  I was intrigued by their service and would have been thrilled to sell it- except for the fact that it involved heavy phone sales and cold calling.

The gist of their service:
They have created an application ("app"- which basically means it's a computer software application that is hosted in a browser-controlled environment such as java... ) that they offer to their clients.  This application works with facebook fanpages.  Once a company has a fanpage on facebook and some other online store site they can easily apply the function to their fanpage - that when someone goes to their fanpage you see their products right there as if it was a duplicate store without ever leaving facebook!

There have been statistics shows that facebook gets just about as many hits as google does so this is an excellent marketing ticket for e-commerce companies.  Plus, facebook is known for their targeted marketing- because the age, gender and location of the member is all recorded and the ads are manipulated to be appropriated for those stats.

Let's take Nike for example.  They have an online store selling their products, plus a fanpage on facebook.  When you "like" them on facebook and become a fan and then visit their fanpage- there you will see all of their products - exactly as you would see them on their site - and when making a purchase the checkout button is there and only redirected to the main check-out once you click on it.

If a store does not have a facebook page you can easily follow the steps on how to create one.  It's very easy.  The only requirement is that the business has a site with products and a checkout.

The benefits of Sortprice are:
1) Targeted marketing- getting the customers who are already fans of your company and products.
2) Never leaving facebook- and having the products right on the site.
3) Once you make a purchase all your friends can see and that increases the exposure as well.

There is a monthly fee- it is quite pricey- but companies can assess whether the fees are worth their ROI (return on investment) is worth it.  They have a lot of very satisfied customers, ie Petco, Adidas...

You can check them out as Sortprice.com.  Their actual website is a price comparison site.  The facebook feature is an added service they have developed more recently with the rise of facebook stores.

Google AdSense- Pay-Per-Click (PPC) - Monetizing Online

The purpose of this blog was not to monetiz.  I started it purely to learn about how online media works and how people actually DO make money online, while blogging my findings along the way.   Since I do seem to be getting a decent amount of traffic onto this site, I figured why not just put up some Google Ad.
Placing ads on my blog is both a learning experience and an experiment to see how it all works.

Here were my findings:
1) Placing the Ad onto the site: I can go into a whole song and dance as to how to embed the ads into the blog- but it is a whole lot of HTML jargon.  I just googled "How to place adsense onto a blog" or something like that and came up with very detailed instructions.   I do not remember them at this point- but it took me all about a half an hour in total.  Yes, for easier reference I could have copied and pasted the steps into this blog, but why should I if you can just google it and follow the clear instructions. For now I am ok with that.  I There was a lot of HTML reading and cutting and pasting- which I am so clueless about and really disinterested in as well.  However, as you can see it worked.  And the whole time I was saying to myself that I would just blindly follow the instructions and then hope for the best.

2) People actually DO click on the ads.  I have to check my adsense account, but last I checked I had make a couple of cents!  But for doing nothing (a half an hour of investment) why not make some cents- just for the kick of it.  Plus, in the future who knows if more people will suddenly start to visit this site. Also, it's just a great skill to have whenever you are building sites- and you don't have to do anything.

Believe it or not there are people who make a living off people clicking on their google ads!!!
If you have a couple of websites with traffic and ads- it all "adds up!"

3) It's free. Period.

Maybe one day I will post the steps to placing the ads, but for now this is all.
I can only tell you it's easier than it seems.
